Freeze Frame

The invention of photography like many technical innovations has dramatically altered our perception and experience of the world. The freezing of an observable scene is like a miracle really. This is what brought me to photography……to be able to share a moment of time, to look into the past so to speak, to record ,what most take so much for granted, the unseen, the stamen of a flower, the wings of a fly, to see into the flame of a candle.

If the attraction of this miracle was to sustain a career though, then soon the art of photography was displaced by the need to make a living at photography. But the two are not mutually exclusive. Even the mundane commercial table top photo requires the basic compositional elements established by the masters of the renaissance. Those basic rules of composition and light have carried me through 30 years of images. Ansel Adams once said if he made one good photograph a year he would be pleased. He also said he felt insufficient in his endeavors but that he was on the verge of something great. I feel that every time I put the viewfinder to my eye, as I learn new techniques, new equipment and now new technologies. Its an exciting time in the short lived history of photography and I’m privileged to be part of it.
