What do you get when you combine a handful of eager marketing professionals, give them some work gloves and power tools, and pair them with a few construction experts? A solid and stable 29-foot wheelchair ramp, of course!

On Friday, March 20, we closed the doors to our Charleston office to get out and give back to the community by partnering with Operation Home, a local nonprofit that aims to help people remain in their homes by increasing safety and accessibility.

As a business organization, The Brandon Agency believes that we have a responsibility to serve and give back to the people in our surrounding communities. Not only do we see the importance of serving our neighbors, but we also encourage it by taking time out of the office to work toward the goal of bettering our community together as a team.

Our day was spent in Hollywood, S.C., at the home of a resident in need of a wheelchair ramp. After meeting a few folks from the Operation Home construction crew, we began digging post holes, leveling the base posts out, pouring cement to give the ramp a solid foundation and power-drilling away. It wasn’t too long before our work started resembling a wheelchair ramp and standing sturdy enough for us to test it out.

Operation Home thrives on the mission to help people remain in their homes by increasing safety and accessibility through the coordination of critical home repairs for low-income residents of Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. The organization receives referrals from a wide network of providers and serves members of the community through critical home repair, as well as heat and cold relief.

“Operation Home’s mission is to focus on low-wealth homeowners who struggle to keep up their home, including households that contain children, those with disabilities and older adults,” says Sandy Milliken, executive director of Operation Home. “We are so grateful to The Brandon Agency team for giving its time and skills to partner alongside us as we contribute to the positive and vital change we long to bring to residents in our community.”

I believe the true reward of the day for The Brandon Agency team was meeting the homeowner and getting to see how thankful and joyful the resident was when the ramp was completed. It feels incredible to have had the opportunity to share our time and efforts in order to bring happiness and provide a safe and stable wheelchair ramp for our new friend in our community.
